Intimate lubricant is probably the most underrated accessory in sexual life — yet, it changes everything. Whether it's to improve comfort, prolong pleasure, protect mucous membranes, or optimize the use of a sex toy, a good lubricant makes a real difference. But you still need to choose the right type for the intended use. Here's a clear guide to help you make the right choice.

Why use a lubricant?

Natural bodily lubrication varies considerably depending on the person, the time of the hormonal cycle, stress levels, or certain medications. It can be insufficient regardless of the level of arousal — so it is not an indicator of desire, contrary to a still-too-widespread belief.

An intimate lubricant reduces friction, protects vulvar, vaginal, and anal mucous membranes, improves comfort during intercourse or sex toy use, and can intensify sensations depending on its formulation. For anal stimulation in particular, it is absolutely essential — the anal area produces no natural lubrication.

Water-based lubricant: the most versatile

This is the most common and recommended type for general use. Compatible with all sex toy materials — including medical-grade silicone — and with all types of condoms, it does not degrade any material and leaves no stains on textiles.

Its light texture and easy rinse with water make it pleasant to use. Its main drawback: it dries out faster than silicone-based formulas, which may require reapplication during prolonged sessions. Choose a glycerin-free formula if you are prone to yeast infections — glycerin can upset the vaginal flora in some people.

Silicone-based lubricant: for lasting pleasure

Thicker and more durable than water-based formulas, silicone lubricant remains active much longer without requiring reapplication — this is its main advantage for prolonged sessions or anal stimulation.

It is compatible with latex condoms and can be used in water (bath, shower, pool) without washing off. Its major and prohibitive drawback: it degrades medical-grade silicone. A silicone-based lubricant used with a silicone sex toy irreparably damages the toy's surface, making it porous and potentially harmful. This rule is absolute — never use them together.

Hybrid lubricant: the best of both worlds?

Hybrid lubricant combines a water base with a small proportion of silicone — usually between 5 and 12%. It offers better durability than pure water-based lubricant, while remaining compatible with most silicone sex toys thanks to its low silicone concentration.

In theory, it's the best compromise. In practice, opinions are divided — some sex toy manufacturers still advise against hybrids on their silicone products as a precaution. If you opt for a hybrid, always test a small amount on an inconspicuous area of your toy before full use.

Special formulas: warming, relaxing, oil-based

Warming lubricants produce a sensation of heat upon skin contact — they can intensify sensations but should be used with caution on sensitive mucous membranes and are not recommended with condoms.

Relaxing lubricants contain active ingredients that relax smooth muscles — they are specifically formulated to facilitate anal penetration or for people with sensitive vaginal mucous membranes. Useful, but choose a dermatologically tested formulation.

Oil-based lubricants (coconut oil, almond oil, etc.) are moisturizing and long-lasting, but incompatible with latex condoms — they degrade them and eliminate their protective effect. Reserved for couples without condoms and without silicone sex toys.
